Florina Lungu - Are you in control of your life?

Have you ever wondered what separates the people who achieve their goals from the people who do not?

There are so many things it could be. Maybe the people with success stories were born into wealthier or healthier families. Maybe those who do not realize their dreams do not have access to the same resources. Maybe it is just a matter of which star was in ascension when you were born.

Not so! Actually, what it comes down to is the answer to this question…

“Are you in control of your life?”

If you believe your life is the result of your own actions, then you know that whatever goal you have is your own to accomplish. Whatever you want is yours and yours alone to go get. Your actions result in your achievement.

If you do not believe that, then what you want might come to you no matter what you do – or it might just be out of your reach forever, regardless of your decisions.

As a doctor I speak to many patients who put off creating healthy habits because they believe their genetics have set them up to fail. This ailment or that mental illness runs in the family so their genes are out to get them.

First, I want to say that my heart goes out to people who live their life by this idea. Is there much of a difference between believing that you cannot have a better life because of your genetic makeup, and believing that you are just downright cursed?

But even so, they are wrong.

These patients do what they like and don’t do what they don’t like. They think their actions have no consequences, so they live by preference and not by principle.

But they are wrong.

Even if they do try to create a health plan, they soon fall away from it because they believe it has all been decided for them already.

But they are wrong!

You may have heard the phrase, “Genetics loads the gun; lifestyle pulls the trigger.” It is absolutely true. Our choices pave the way for certain genes to express themselves and block the path to keep others from expressing. You can follow a plan that combats the difficult hand that genetics has dealt you or you can make choices that lean you directly into it.

Yes, there are genetic predispositions. Our genes are our body’s blueprints and yes, they can make it easier or harder to accomplish certain health goals.

But they decide your life no more than the wind decides which way a motorized boat goes. You may be fighting the way of the waves, but you will make it wherever you are aimed.

How are you aiming yourself?

Don’t allow the busyness of your day-to-day distract you from being intentional. If you believe you are in control of your life, then you know you are the only one who can decide what your future looks like – you know your actions lead to your results.

How are you acting?

The choices you make today shape your health tomorrow – not your genes, not your family history, not your habits, not your muscle memory. Your choices.

How are you choosing?

Remember that small actions over time lead to big results. A series of minutes is a day. A series of days is a week. A series of weeks is a year. A series of years is a lifetime. And you can create a lifetime that you love if you make wise health choices.

And the sooner you start, the sooner you can get to loving it 🙂

Make today your masterpiece!
