Today, I want to introduce you to three people who can help you change your life.

One of them you may have heard of is Dr. Daniel Amen. He is not only a brain specialist and passionate advocate of brain health, having studied the brain for more than 30 years, but he is also my mentor and associate. 1.Your brain is involved with everything you do and everything you are. All of your skills, memories, characteristics – all the things making you who you are – live inside your brain.

And this of course means that…

2. When your brain works right, you work right; when your brain is troubled, you are much more likely to have trouble in your life. When you know the significance and central role of your brain, you understand just how crucial its proper function is to your well-being.

3. Your brain is the most amazing, most energy-hungry organ in the universe. On average, the brain makes up .025% of your body’s mass, but it takes 20-30% of the calories you consume and 20% of your blood flow.

4. Your brain is sensitive. This thing that controls your entire life is the consistency of soft butter and it lives in a hard bone cage with lots of bony ridges – it is very easily injured!

5. Many things hurt the brain. It is common knowledge that concussions, drug use, and alcohol consumption harm your brain. But did you know that excessive carbohydrates, chronic stress, and poor relational health can also negatively affect the brain?

6. Many things help the brain. And not just the things we all know are good for the brain, either, like exercise and brain-healthy supplements and foods. New kinds of learning and healthy influential relationships are critical factors in our brain health, as well. 

7. Certain systems in the brain tend to do specific things, and problems in these systems tend to cause symptoms that can benefit from targeted treatments. 

8. Looking at the brain gives many powerful insights not obtainable by just listening to symptoms alone. Dr. Amen has opened several clinics that allow patients to see their brain and its activity, which lets him treat them more effectively. The results of these scans can be life-changing.

9. All psychiatric illnesses are not single or simple disorders in the brain; each one has multiple types that require unique treatments, and one treatment will not work for everyone.

10. Brain aging is optional. You can choose to care for your brain in a way that restores its cognition and subverts its degeneration.

11. You can change your brain and change your life. If your brain really is at the center of everything you do, even one healthy habit can make a big difference. Many good habits add up to complete transformation!
