Florin Lungu - "It's all in your head"

Last week, I promised I would start showing you how to change your life by changing your brain. But in order to do that, I must first explain one crucial fact…

Your brain impacts everything you do and everything you are.

Let me explain.

You have a body, but you know you are not your body. You are not your arms or your legs. Your heart pumps your blood and your lungs filter the air you breathe, but those physical things do not make you who you are. You do not become a different person after visiting the hairdresser!

Who you are is more substantial than that. It cannot be touched or measured in kilos. You are your skills, your memories, your personality – your sense of humor, the beliefs behind your thoughts and actions and reactions and decisions… Your identity is a complex combination of intangible things.

But all of those intangible things live inside your very tangible brain. And they are all impacted by the physical chemical interactions taking place inside the brain.

What you feed it, how you hydrate it, how much rest you give it, how much stress you endure – all of these add fuel to the fire of your mind, or snuff it out.

And no two brains are exactly alike, so what you feed your brain may have a different effect on your spouse, or your children, or your coworker. Some brains are naturally limited in their chemistry and need medication to function their best.

So, just to summarize…

  1. Everything about you and your life is affected by your brain chemistry, and
  2. Your brain chemistry is affected by the way you treat your brain.

Those are some powerful ideas!

Now I know it sounds like I am just trying to get you excited – but really, these are some powerful thoughts. So powerful, in fact, if you take them to heart, they have the power to transform the way that you treat yourself and others.

As we live our lives, we see things through only one lens: our own perspective.

The less awareness we have, the more we let our perspective be subjective – colored by our own feelings and thoughts. We do this because we feel like that even if it doesn’t help us. We see others do something and based on how our brains work, we make assumptions about them.

But when instead we allow our perspective to be objective, grounded in reality, we start acting with more awareness.

We make brain-healthy choices that set us up for future success. We learn how to take even better care of ourselves and loved ones and experience happier, fuller lives because of it.

And we understand that others are also just acting out their brains’ chemical inputs as well. Literally and metaphorically, we truly cannot know what is going on in someone else’s head – so we may as well give them the benefit of the doubt.

So, what does that leave you with this week?

  1. Treat your brain right. Remember: your brain impacts everything you do and everything you are. When you make your choices with your brain in mind, you position yourself for your own best possible life. What are the best brain-healthy choices to make? Tune in next week to find out 🙂
  2. Give others grace. We are all sharing the same planet looking for the same love, just doing different things – based on the brain chemistry that we have at this time. And when you start thinking of others this way, you reduce your own stress… and your own brain treats you better, too.

Make today your masterpiece!
