Beyond the Surface: A Deeper Look into the Hidden Struggles of Addiction

It was early morning when I saw the post.

Still in my robe, coffee steaming beside me, my eyes landed on a list shared by a fellow therapist, Alina Maria Blăgoi. She quoted Charlie Chaplin, a man known for his humor, but whose depth too often gets overlooked.

One line stopped me:

“I love walking in the rain… because no one can see my tears.”

I felt that. Not because I was sad. But because I knew how many of us hide our exhaustion under the performance of competence. We show up, smile, and keep going. Even when everything in us is asking for pause.

The post continued with what Charlie Chaplin called “the best six doctors in the world.” Here they are:

  • Sunshine
  • Rest
  • Movement
  • Diet
  • Self-respect
  • Friends

I almost laughed out loud. Because this is what I’ve been saying in my practice for years. These “doctors” live inside us. And yet, we treat them like background noise – optional, indulgent, secondary.

Let me be blunt with you. If you constantly feel exhausted, overwhelmed, or emotionally flat… It’s not because you’re broken. It’s because you’re not listening.

We weren’t made to run like machines. We weren’t built to survive on caffeine and tension. We were designed – brilliantly – to heal, adapt, and thrive.

But only if we remember the rules of the game.

The body is not your enemy. The mind is not a burden. And rest is not weakness.

These six “doctors” may sound too simple to matter – especially if you’re the type who reads leadership books and listens to performance podcasts. But ask yourself this: When was the last time you really let the sun touch your skin, without your phone in your hand? When was the last time you moved your body because it felt good, not because it burned calories?

We’ve learned to ignore ourselves. We override every signal. We sit at the desk when we’re tired. We eat standing up, scrolling through emails. We go to sleep thinking about what we didn’t finish today, and what we have to fix tomorrow.

And then we wonder why we’re unwell.

Let me tell you a quick story. A patient of mine, let’s call her M., once told me: “I don’t think I’ve truly rested since I was 12. Even on vacation, I feel guilty.” This woman was smart, driven, and successful. But her body was whispering something she refused to hear.

Until it started screaming.

Insomnia. Brain fog. Anxiety. Low immunity. All the signals were there, loud and clear. But she didn’t need another pill. She needed permission.

Permission to rest. To nourish. To let go of the idea that health is something you “earn” through effort.

Here’s the truth I want you to understand – once and for all:

You are your own best doctor. Not because you don’t need support or medication when necessary, of course, you do. But because no external expert can override what your body already knows.

The way you speak to yourself. The way you move. The way you eat. The way you sleep. The way you connect. These are your daily prescriptions.

I want you to feel how powerful this is.

We were created with supernatural intelligence wrapped in natural form. We regenerate when we sleep. We flush stress hormones through movement. We strengthen our immune system through joy and connection.

There’s a reason we’re wired this way. It’s not accidental. It’s not “soft.” It’s biology.

So the question is: What are you doing with this design? Are you using it to expand… or to survive?

I’m not here to make you feel guilty. I’m here to remind you of what you already know but may have forgotten.

That healing isn’t a miracle. It’s your natural state. But it can’t happen under pressure. It needs space. And it needs your attention.

Let me leave you with this reflection:

If a stranger followed you around for a week and watched how you treated your body, your mind, your heart, and your energy, would they believe you were someone worth caring for?

Because you are.

And the minute you start acting like you are, everything shifts. Energy returns. Mood stabilizes. The brain works better. The world feels less threatening.

Not because anything outside of you changed, but because you came back to yourself.

So today, I challenge you to pick just one of those six doctors. Let the sun in. Take a nap. Call a friend. Eat slowly. Move your body. Speak to yourself with the respect you reserve for people you admire.

And watch what happens.

You were not made to live in pain. You were made to heal. You just have to believe it, and act like it, starting now.

With care,

Florina
